ARKEN LEGAL

Arken Legal had been based in a disused train station, The Old Station in Hever for nearly 20 years.  Set in quite a remote and rural setting, the company had grown and adapted the space to work for it as best it could, however the space did not lend itself to modern working practices.  Having made the decision to trade views of open country for a space that reflected the business plan and anticipated growth, new space was sought and identified in Westerham.

Managing Director, Dave Newick was clear from the outset that one of the biggest opportunities  was changing the culture of the business.  He was looking to bring the team into modern, flexible space reflecting the industry they are in and the company brand and values. These included being transparent, collaborative and being unified by a common purpose. The space that Arken identified was extremely dated but was ideally located close to local shops and amenities and ‘had potential’.  We spent a lot of time listening to the client and making sure we understood exactly what was required of the new space.

Break-out and meeting space was a primary focus.  It was really important that space was available for private meetings, one to ones, informal catch ups and socialising.  We designed a flexible space that offers all of these elements and can be opened up and used as one very large space when required.  We provided new furniture throughout the new workspace including sit/stand desks, bench desking, meeting room furniture, seating, sofa booths and soft seating.

The branding element of the project was a lot of fun.  Rather than just working with the main company colour of orange, we worked together to create a complimentary colour palette.  While this is used to define certain areas of the office, it also creates flow throughout the space.  Trading open views of countryside for a town environment was a bit of a concern.  To overcome this we brought the outside in!  Creating a purpose built planter as part of the new tea-point provides a focal point and natural feel to this space.  This has further been enhanced by more workplace ‘landscaping’ with other plants around the office.

Having recently visited Arken Legal, just over a year after completing the project for them, it was lovely to hear ‘The fit out has delivered everything we hoped it would.  The whole team come together every day for lunch and to play on the playstation in the break-out space.  It has been great for team morale and a positive company culture.  The business is growing steadily too thanks in part to good work space.’
